Profile                                                            Judy Barrass

Judy Barrass works from 'Backstudio' in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Originally a ceramic artist, she later majored in fibre at Goulburn CAE in the 1980's  specialising in fabric design and construction, large wall hung weavings and surface decoration techniques.  Going back to art school to study papermaking and artist books for two years at the University of Tasmania Art School in the 1990's was a significant turning point, and paper and books has been the focus of her work since. She has also recently begun to incorporate printmaking into her practice and continues to use ceramic techniques, basketry, weaving and sewing in sculpture, wall pieces and artist books.

Judy's current practice includes unique artist books, small editions, altered books,  handmade paper, paper sculpture, etching, collagraphs and relief prints. Many of her books and sculptural works have a strong connection to the natural environment. Whimsical drawings of women have been a constant throughout her varied career, appearing in ceramics, books, and etchings; on PVC pipes; and in pen drawings that are much sought after by collectors.
Judy's work has been exhibited widely and is held in many private collections. Public collections holding her work include Mackay City Artist Book Collection, Queensland State Library - James Hardie Library, the Australian Print Collection at Wagga Wagga Regional Gallery, and Wexford Arts Centre, Ireland.
Fostering community involvement in the arts and passing on knowledge and skills are an integral part of Judy's practice. She has travelled widely in Australia and New Zealand introducing many people to the joy of making paper and books through workshops, community development projects, involvement in community centres and festivals and in her role as President of Papermakers of Queensland. She is part of the team that organises the annual artists books exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery and also contributes to planning for the arts in the Noosa community by her membership of Noosa Council's Arts and Heritage Community Governance Board.
